爱斯基摩杓鹬

爱斯基摩杓鹬，一种繁殖于北美极北部的滨鸟，迁徙到南美南端越冬，目前它们极可能已经灭绝¹。

爱斯基摩杓鹬的羽毛颜色近于其他杓鹬，包括斑纹密布的棕色羽毛，长而下弯的喙。爱斯基摩杓鹬是一种小型杓鹬（体长约30cm，同样分布在北美的哈德逊杓鹬身长约37～47cm），喙的比例相对多数杓鹬物种也稍短，初级飞羽底面光滑、无条纹²。

爱斯基摩杓鹬是一种长途迁徙的候鸟，迁徙范围纵跨了整个美洲大陆的最北和最南端。秋季，它们从近北极的加拿大西北地区与阿拉斯加上的苔原出发，向东迁徙到拉布拉多与魁北克海岸，然后跨洋迁徙至南美，主要在阿根廷潘帕斯草原越冬；春季，它们穿过墨西哥湾，经大平原一路向北，返回位于极北地区的筑巢繁殖地。³ 迁徙过程中，爱斯基摩杓鹬主要以水滨和田地里的昆虫等无脊椎动物为食，也摄入浆果等植物。

19世纪中期前，爱斯基摩杓鹬一度种群繁茂，有认为达百万只以上（最近认为数十万只的估计较为合理）。⁴但在接下来的数十年内，因为人类的大规模捕杀，种群数量急剧下降，走向灭绝。⁵ 它们局限的栖息地与超长迁徙路线上的有限停留地因农田改造等消失、破碎、退化，加剧了这一进程。⁶ 20世纪开始，爱斯基摩杓鹬已很罕见，最后可确定的记录是在20世纪60年代。1962年4月，在德克萨斯州靠近墨西哥湾的Galveston拍到了确认是爱斯基摩杓鹬的照片。1963年，在巴巴多斯的Foster沼泽附近，一只孤鸟被射杀。⁷ 此后，相继有比较可信，但未经证实的目击事件。比较振奋人心的一次是在1981年5月7日，多达23只爱斯基摩杓鹬在德州Galveston附近被目击。⁸ 一直到2006年，仍有目击报告，但都未得到证实，也有相应的质疑。⁹
